An aerial robotic system is presented for terrain modelling. The system, which combines an unmanned helicopter with some sensors and equipment, can fly over large areas and detect the terrains of ROI (Region Of Interest) to build accurate 3D (Three-Dimensional) terrain models. The combination is considered feasible and reliable for terrain modelling and has many potential applications, such as terrain modelling, planet exploration and climate and weather measurement, etc. In the system, the accurate longitude and latitude information is obtained by means of a pair of differential GPS (Global Positioning System) equipment, while the precise altitude information is ultimately acquired using a height detection device. The experiment has proved that the global accuracy of the system for terrain modelling is within 0.1 m when the terrain surfaces reflect the laser beams well.
