Secondary batteries can be electrically recharged. That property induces a decrease in volumetric and specific capacities. It is actually mandatory to keep double ionic and electronic conductivity within active masses during cycling. Several factors modify the texture of active masses; among them the most important are the differences of specific gravity between the phases involved in the interconversion, and the phenomenon of dissolution - reprecipitation. Lead-acid batteries are typical of the difficulties encountered when making reliable, powerful and well cycling batteries. SLI battery (Starting, Lightning, Ignition) is a powerful battery, but it does not sustain prolonged discharge. Traction batteries have good capacities and cyclability, but limited power. Valve regulated batteries are friendly and powerful, but sensitive to misuses. Anyhow lead acid batteries are the least expensive batteries related to kWh stored, and they dominate the market of the large capacities.
