Current developments demonstrate growing international interest in the use of hydrogen as fuel for vehicle drives. An important reason for this is the need to further lower the specific energy consumption and to meet CO2-emission targets. A vital factor for the success of these activities is the development of high-performance hydrogen storage systems, which give a good compromise of volumetric and gravimetric storage efficiency. Furthermore, with regard to the planned increasing production rates during the next years, the total costs of a storage system are getting more into the focus of vehicle manufacturers. Based on the knowledge and experience gained to date with the various storage technologies, the automotive industry increasingly favours high-pressure storage as a preferred technical solution, which, because of the low physical density of hydrogen, requires gas compression up to 700 bar. The presentation will give an overview of technologies for the storage of compressed hydrogen. Besides the different cylinder designs, peripheral components of a complete system, such as valves, safety devices, and filling couplings will be discussed. Main questions concerning safety of hydrogen storage will be answered with results out of the test program for hydrogen cylinders according to EIHP draft and ISO/DIS 15869.
