Hybrid electric and pure electric vehicles are gaining in popularity and use. These vehicles have requirements of both high power and high energy density battery systems. To meet these requirements, it is important that technologies are developed for highly reliable and highly capable battery packs. This paper introduces Quallion's unique battery packaging technology, the Matrix Battery Design (MBD). In this design, each single cell is electrically connected in parallel and series to configure a 2D matrix configuration. This technology offers advanced safety, reduced weight and improved thermal management capability together with superior reliability and survivability. Several tests are described to examine reliability and survivability improvements with the Matrix Battery Design.
