The operating strength of fillet welded joints, used frequently in marine constructions, was examined under bending and torsion loads. The computational methods were used on simulated thick sheet metal welded joints, both with and without joint preparation (HV and HY respectively) to derive the qualitative comparison of stress distributions and life-time as a function of shape of thick sheet metal joints. In the fillet welds, HYs proved to be more favorable in comparison to HVs under dynamic bending and torsion loads. In HY fitted welds, the unwelded part of the joint acts as a notch that can be strongly endangered, especially in higher dynamic loads. Superposed loads can contribute to the activation of the damage mechanisms, which impairs the lifetime of the construction units. The operating strength of fillet welds is also found to be conditionally influenced by the weld shape under bending and tension loads.
