Ultrasonic testing of automotive production spot welds has always been viewed with reluctance and apprehension. This is mainly due to a lack of knowledge of how to set up the right process. However, it seems clear that nondestructive testing is the only real alternative to the hammer and chisel method. We have developed several monitoring techniques to gather our data and to determine our progress. These monitoring techniques include monitoring the following: cost savings projections, yearly cost savings, total welds tested and weld quality percentage. We accomplished our implementation of ultrasonic spot weld testing through trial and error. Achieving our progressive goals has opened our eyes to this new technological way to save scrap, money and time through the use of nondestructive testing and a proven process. Ultrasonic testing is just one process that can be used to achieve these goals. We again emphasize the importance of putting a process in place that will ensure a positive beginning, successful results and continued profitability.
