Every automotive embedded system must boot up and begin responding to external events within a very short and predictable timeframe. For example, a telematics control unit may need to respond to an in-vehicle network within 50 milliseconds of power on. Failure to meet this requirement means a failure of the device. An infotainment system, meanwhile, may have to display a splash screen within one second of bootup and allow user interaction within two seconds of bootup. In some cases, the end customer imposes these timing requirements. In other cases, it is the device manufacturer who defines these requirements, as a way of differentiating their device from other solutions in the marketplace. By using the warm and cold booting techniques described in this paper, the system designer can build a device that meets strict boot timing requirements. No one technique will work in all situations, therefore the underlying software platform must allow the various techniques to be combined in multiple ways. By using an operating system such as the QNX Neutrino RTOS, which can support these combinations, the system designer can build a fast-boot solution with modest integration effort.
