In order to ensure the safe operation of trains, there is a requirement to turn off the power system when a fault is present (e.g. a short circuit). As modern, longer, heavier trains begin to draw larger currents from the railway power system, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between a power system fault and the normal operation of a train. An incorrect decision can lead to an unsafe state resulting in a fire or explosion, or an unnecessary delay to trains running on the railway system. The research described in this paper focuses on the development of algorithms for detecting and diagnosing faults in railway power systems. To detect faults, measurements of the voltage and current at railway substations and along the track are used, together with train position information available from the signalling system. Due to the practicalities of obtaining real short-circuit fault data from a live railway system, a model of a 20 km section of a DC supplied railway has been developed which is able to simulate the operation of 3 kV trains. The results provided in this paper enable the setting of appropriate fault parameters together with preliminary indications of possible protection methods, which could be practically used as part of a DC electric railway power system.
