ACC is a driver assistance system that is available from many different manufacturers. Standard ACC systems work at speeds from 30 to 200 km/h and completely ignore stationary objects. Next generation systems work at velocities from 0 to 200 km/h. They support follow to stop maneuvers. When the vehicle has been stopped by the FSRA system, the driver needs to confirm a go or has to accelerate by himself. This limitation reduces driving convenience in a stop and go situation. The introduced FSRA extends these second generation ACC systems by offering a fully automatic go. This functionality is possible due to a reliable detection of any kind of objects in front of the vehicle with a wide horizontal field of view. Next generation ACC systems will be able to perform follow to stop maneuvers, but no automatic go. In this paper, a Full Speed Range ACC (FSRA) system based on a Laserscanner is described. Wide horizontal field of view, long range and high angle and distance resolution of this laserscanner grant a reliable detection of moving and stationary objects. This sensor supports the FSRA application and allows a full automatic go. The introduced FSRA extends the functionality of standard ACC systems to traffic jams and low speeds. Cut-in maneuvers of other vehicles can be detected early due to the sensor capabilities.
