Safety applications comprise of all inter-vehicle applications with the primary goal of improving the safety of the car, its passengers and luggage. It will be distinguished between active and passive applications. A clear cut differentiation between active and passive safety applications is still the subject of discussion in the research community. In our opinion, the cause of this disparity lies in the differences in the capabilities of present and future technologies. While the technologies deployed in today's vehicles are able to detect a crash after it has occurred, improvements in wireless communication in general and inter-vehicle communication in particular would enable cars of the future to be able to determine that a crash is inevitable before it actually occurs. This paper starts off by describing in detail safety applications and giving an insight into their characteristics followed by the definition and identification of relevant security services. The next three sections evaluate the active safety security mechanisms based on symmetric keys, certificates and plausibility checks, while pointing out advantages, short-comings and open issues of each approach. Thereafter, some core concepts relevant to plausibility checks are introduced. The paper wraps up with a short conclusion and future works.
