Based on the measurements carried out in this study, key requirements for automotive carbon dioxide sensors can be determined. For DCV Systems, a high resolution of about 200 ppm and a good accuracy over the füll automotive temperature range will be necessary to realise an effective control of the carbon dioxide level inside the car. The measurement range should be between 0 ppm and 5.000 ppm. For leak detection, a short reaction time below 10 s and a measurement range between 5.000 ppm and 30.000 ppm will be necessary. This measurement range and reaction lime will be sufficient to detect leaks of the system before unwanted concentrations can develop. For both applications good long term stability and the ability to measure absolute concentrations is mandatory. The spectroscopic sensor described in this paper is able to fulfill both set of requirements and can thus be used for DCV Systems as well as for leak detection in R744 Systems.
