Two hull steels of different tensile strength (230 MPa and 360 MPa) and the respective weldments were tested for mechanical properties. The energy to destroy, tensile strength, and elongation at break were determined to assess the applicability of the steels for shipbuilding. The required life time of the ships was set minimum 25 years on seas. The minimum thickness of the steels was established to reduce the weight of the ships and the fuel consumption. The welded constructions showed a decreased tensile strength, decreased energy to destroy values and lowe elongations at break. It was of diavantage because the welded materials are used in every ship constructions. The test results were done on diagrams.
