The product development of new component parts is a very complex process. To predict the behavior of a new product a lot of forecast tools are used. Two important tools for the prediction of the mechanical behavior are the FEM and the test. The results of both methods have often differences. It is an important objective to get good correspondence between simulation and test. Model Updating is the automatic setting of parameters of the simulation model with analysis methods. The automatic calibration of the simulation to the test results accelerates the product development. This article shows the usage of model updating with PERMAS in practice with a two step approach. The first step is the calibration of eigenfrequencies of a jet ring fan. The second step is the adaption of the response in the frequency domain. PERMAS has all required optimization methods, definitions of restrictions, design variables and optimization objectives for model updating in structural dynamics. The updating of a shell model to the quality of a volume mesh with ten times the number of DOF is shown in this article. With model updating of eigenfrequencies and amplitudes of frequency response analysis the accuracy of the finite element model for calculations of excited dynamic loads is raised.
