It is of great significance to improve the fatigue performance of the welded joints of X65 pipeline steel by effective methods to ensure the security and prolong the service life. Treating weld toes properly can improve the fatigue performance. Ultrasonic impact treatment ( UIT) is a more effective and convenient method to enhance the fatigue strength of welded joints and suchlike structures. Fatigue tests were conducted on the specimens made of X65 pipeline steel. The test specimens were investigated on the fatigue strength and the fatigue life at the same stress range level by comparing the ones peened by UIT with the others without the treatment: the fatigue strength of the specimens as UIT. The main results are summarized as follows: The fatigue strength Delta sigma (corresponding to 2 x 106 cycles) of X65 pipeline steel butt joints: 219 MPa as welded only, 302 MPa as UIT. That of the specimens as base metal is 338 MPa. At the given range of stress level, the fatigue strength of the X65 pipeline steel specimens treated by UIT is increased by about 38% and the fatigue life is prolonged by 1.85 to 11 multiples, compared with the specimens as welded. Ultrasonic impact treatment is an effective and convenient method to improve the fatigue performance of X65 pipeline steel welded butt joints.
