Advanced mechatronic vehicle systems include a variety of actuators and sensors. The mechatronic integration of these actuators, the involved sensors and electronic control units increase the system's performance, driving range, and safety. However, these benefits arc paralleled by an increase of the complexity of the system. As a result, fault detection and diagnosis becomes more important. This contribution describes a model-based fault detection approach for vehicle horizontal und vertical dynamics. Model based methods have been developed for sensor and process fault detection and diagnosis of an active hydraulic suspension system. Dynamic mathematical models arc used for describing the lateral vehicle behavior and vertical behavior of an active suspension in real-time. Based on parameter estimation and parity equations symptoms for fault detection arc generated. This is followed by fault diagnosis with fuzzy logic. Results arc presented for measurements with a vehicle and a suspension test rig. The fault detection method is intended to be used for mechatronic suspensions, driver assistance, and vehicle control systems.
