The best delivery method for your process unit depends on your plant location, and on the amount and purity of hydrogen you need. Hydrogen customers have the option of installing on-site facilities or purchasing their gas from an industrial gas supplier or a by-product manufacturer. Gaseous hydrogen is stored and delivered, compressed, in gas cylinders or other containers. These vessels are usually made of steel or aluminium, although fiber composites are also employed occasionally. Small quantities are delivered in small steel cylinders (1 liter) or portable alumium pressure cans (0.38 liters) with a maximum pressure of 12 and 200 bar.. Larger quantities arenormally transported in cylinders with capacities of 10, 20, 40 or 50 liters and allow a maximum filling pressure of 300 bar. If the plant location allows, pipiline supply is the best option for customers with consistently high consumption patterns. Under this option, the customers must hook up to the gas manufacturer's pipiline network. Hydrogen delivered as liquid is transported and stored in thermally insulated pressure tanks. Cylindrical, stationary holding tanks for liquefied gas range in capacity from 1,500 to 80,000 liters. Relatively small shipments are made in cryogenic tanks typically holding between 38 and 1,000 liters. For larger deliveries, special-purpose double-walled and super-insulated vehicles are used. These carry volumes of up to 50,000 liters, which means they can transport approximately 3,300 kg of liquid hydrogen. The technology involved for onsite hydrogen production at the user's plant is fundamentally the same as that employed in the larger plants of hydrogen suppliers. From the customer's viewpoint, the main criteria for evaluating the transport and storage options are cost-effectiveness and gas quality.
