The Artic region has around 25% of the world's undiscovered hydrocarbons that generate huge market opportunities for marine design operational expertise in the field. The developments can be profitable despite of the relatively high operational costs involved in the projects as the oil prices have increased. Aker Arctic has started a project in the Russian Arctic region with the aim of developing new Arctic navigation techniques to lower transportation costs and investing in prototypes together with Neste company. The company developed the Azipod technology for icebreaking and other applications. The company created prototype vessels Uikku and Lunni with 11.4 MW Azipods and polar ice class. The company acquired a production line in the Pechora Sea with Neste to find a suitable place to implement all the technologies.
