The VeRT programme aims at exploiting the capabilities offered by EGNOS (in the near term) and Galileo (in medium long term) to provide new applications in the road sector; specifically, an extended service concept of road tolling is addressed in the present paper, herein after indicated as 'remote tolling', such to cover basic tolling service, but also additional 'pay-per use services' on motorways transport, as well as in urban environment (parking and access to restricted zones) or in both the environments as the pay per use insurance. These service concepts require certified user positioning data on which the final user invoice has to be based, hence it is mandatory a guarantee navigation service that can be only kept if the integrity information is available. In this context the higher level of accuracy and integrity provided by EGNOS (respect GPS-only) and Galileo represents an essential condition connected with the above listed services. From a general point of view, the users must be sure that they are paying for the offered service they are using, thus the right positioning of the users and the guarantee of the service provided assumes an important role. The final objectives of the VeRT project is to cover the first steps for the implementation of these end-to-end Road Services based on new Satellite Navigation Technologies. The approach followed in the project has been defined considering two different phases: - Phase A, mainly devoted to user requirements, the initial definition of Service Prototype and characterisation of service prototype (e.g. cost benefit analysis, regulatory aspects, revenue mechanism generation, etc.). - Phase B, dedicated to the implementation of the service and the relevant service prototype demonstration.
