We discuss defects of application of the joint model for high-thrust rocket engines while analysis of optimization problems of space flight mechanics. The new mathematical model of motion control of spacecraft with nuclear rocket engine is suggested, which makes it possible to take into account specific peculiarities of control of this engine. By means of the Pontryagin maximum principle we conduct analysis of properties of optimal control for the general problem of orbital transfer under maximization of payload mass. Effectiveness of the obtained laws of control is shown for example of the model problem of single impulse optimization.
