Heat treatment and surface modification are the key technology to give optimum properties in automotive and mechanical components. And industry is paying every possible effort to implement maximum performance to their products. However, weakening research and development power became serious problems at various companies who reduced researchers and R & D spending during past decade. In this paper, the world trends in national and industrial R & D efforts are compared to remind the basic problems lying behind the trends of competitiveness. And, considering the advancement of power train design and further car weight reduction with the impact of oil prices, some of the typical examples in Automotive materials and processing technologies are introduced to accelerate necessary R & D efforts.
