Alternative acceptance criteria or ECA allow useful increases in the allowable length of girth weld imperfections over their respective workmanship levels, thus lowering the amount of repairs and cut outs. Such levels are particularly useful in mechanized GMAW welds where each welding event can vary in length from one sixth to one half of the pipe circumference. The overall integrity of mechanized girth welds tends to be higher than that for manually made welds due to the rigorous welding procedure qualification and nondestructive inspection requirements required. As such the application of these alternate acceptance standards provides benefits for the pipeline operator and the pipeline constructor alike. It is appropriate that the NDT operators have a reasonable knowledge of the reasons and ECA techniques in order to apply the acceptance criteria.
