This paper discusses two separate but complementary subsurface imaging technologies, Radar Tomography (RT) and Arrayed Induction Receivers (AIR), both of which use an array of receivers to create spatially accurate positional information for subsurface utilities. The commercial advent of these new technologies can substantially impact transportation project design and construction. The manuscript is divided into two parts: Technical and Institutional. The Technical section describes each technology in detail, before discussing the complementary nature of both technologies. The Institutional section addresses the issues inherent to bringing these technologies into mainstream application, and how their application can create significant, long-term benefits. We conclude that using RT, AIR, and similar subsurface imaging technologies to create accurate infrastructure maps during the design phase of major transportation projects, in combination with current and new Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) methods, can have many benefits. The most obvious benefit is significant cost savings in design and construction.
