The authors present in this article a method for the economic evaluation of the lifecycle performance of production systems considering as example automotive body shops. Its purpose is to help body shop planners to conceive, evaluate and optimize different flexible body shop concepts and to help decision takers to make informed decisions taking into account uncertainty, risk, and flexibility. The methodology is used in early planning phases; it is based on a simplified systems engineering approach and consists of three modules- a requirements analysis, a configuration and modeling of possible production systems, and an economic evaluation of production systems and the associated risks. For evaluation, fixed and variable production costs are taken into account as well as costs for any reconfigurations that might become necessary during the system's lifecycle.
