The Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid shows a technical solution of a hybrid powertrain system with full hybrid functionality combined with sophisticated control strategies. This solution is based on current but reengineered powertrain technology. The propulsion system is designed to demonstrate full hybrid functionality with only one electric motor. This way Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid is able to achieve the maximum fuel efficiency combined with lower additional costs compared to systems with two electric motors. Furthermore this concept has no special restrictions concerning top speed or towed weight. In combination with designer fuels like SynDiesel or SunDiesel this powertrain technology assures future mobility under environment-friendly conditions. This concept is scalable from low power solutions up to premium powertrains. The main challenges are the hardware concept, especially the design of the engine clutch, and the control concept with a central torque manager.
