In Mild Hybrid Vehicles the battery not only fulfils the requirements of the vehicle's electrical system. It also has to facilitate additional functions. For instance it has to act as a power source if the starter generator is needed to support the internal combustion engine. Or it becomes a power sink if the starter generator is used as a regenerative brake. This new task comes along with a much higher power flow than in conventional cars. If there was no monitoring of the battery, the high flow of power could lead to rapid destruction of the battery. A battery management system (BMS) has to calculate the actual SOC and to provide information for the energy management of the vehicle to always keep the battery in healthy conditions. The authors have presented a BMA based on an empirical battery model including temperature, efficiency and aging. Without recalibration an error of the battery model below 5 % over a period of up to 3 days accumulated operating time can be shown.
