The growing number of assistance systems in vehicles demands increasing monitoring activities by drivers. The 'reconfigurable instrument cluster' and the 'Head Up Display' (HUD) are two potentially forward-looking displays that will open up new presentation possibilities. Up to now, head-up displays have mainly been used for the representation of digits and symbols. In the meantime, technical progress in the development of these displays has made it possible to produce higher-resolution head-up displays. This is a major pre-requisite for a combination with camera-based methods which are intended to depict traffic scenes. Such a relatively high-resolution display was combined in a test vehicle with the near infrared night vision system ADILISO. In the paper the question of whether the use of the ADILISO system with a head-up display has advantages compared with its use with a head-down display is investigated. A BMW 5 Series (E60) was used as a test vehicle and had the ADILISO system installed in combination with a head-up and a head-down system. The display of the BMW iDrive system which is located in the dashboard to the right of the driver served as the head-down display. To produce a 'real' driving situation for the investigation, a 39 km test route was chosen which included different types of roads (highway, freeway, country road, town driving). The test subjects drove the test route twice, first with one display and then with the other and filled in a questionnaire after each run. The conclusion of the study is that there are no significant differences perceived with regard to safety and possible hazards caused by the system. In terms of ergonomics, the head-up display is considered better, whereby this difference is mainly due to the position of the display. The most significant difference was found in the consideration of attractiveness. A head-up display significantly increases the attractiveness of the system.
