Forward lighting in trucks based on conventional 24V Halogen light sources up to now suffers from coiled-coiled filament designs leading to luminance inhomogeneity and lack of optical performance. This is due to the fact that the filament contains a wire, which is significant longer and thinner if compared to 12V coils. Nowadays progress in material science, however, enables the design of very robust, long lasting 24V single-coiled filaments that overcome these drawbacks. Moreover a huge increase in headlamp range is observed which raises truck lighting to the level of state-of-the-art 12V systems while having at the same time advantages in lamp robustness and lifetime. Experimental results show, that the optimized temperature profile with improved tungsten evaporation rate and restrained arcing proclivity at 28V allows to achieve 200% of service life time when compared to conventional coiled coils without any disadvantage regarding other characteristics. Moreover, the statistics show that range values with single coil lamps scatter by 30%-50% less than with the coiled coil. The reason is of course the inhomogeneity of the latter which makes it very difficult to control complex 24V lamp-reflector systems. Headlamp manufacturers will be able in the future to design truck headlamps without having to compromise between homologation and production.
