The characteristics of the semiconductor based Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) is completely different to the characteristics of traditional light source used in automotive exterior front lighting systems. The characteristics include not only optical items, but also electrical, mechanical and temperature issues. These facts make new approaches in the field of automotive headlamp development necessary. All new technical challenges will lead to more stylistic freedom. The unanswered question will be the strategy of market introduction defined by the OEM, whether LED headlamps will be just an option or give space for additional new brand image and styling. Due to the designer's wishes, the LEDs must be mounted on a 3-dimensional surface with small tolerances to the associated optics. High power LEDs create a lot of heat, so that they have to be assembled with a cooling device. The generated heat should be used for defogging and deicing of the outer lens of the headlamp. Electrical drivers are needed to keep the current through the LED constant. As shown in the paper, the total number of LED needed for a headlamp varies from 7 to 28 single LEDs. It will be the decision of the carmaker what amount of LED he needs for his performance in the car. Without any doubt these headlamps will be extremely expensive due to low volume and high cost. The real performance possible in 4 to 5 years from now can only be assumed. One approach is the projection of the past development steps in the future. As LED luminous flux performance doubles in a period of approximately 3 years, it will be expected that LED will be competitive in luminous flux around the period 2008-2010. By that time, a significantly reduced amount of LED will be able to supply a low beam.
