A retaining system dissipates energy when a driving force tries to separate two bodies from each other. The driving force may be caused by dynamic events which are not further considered. The paper derives a sizing method for retaining systems where sequential failure of fibers with nonlinear material behavior provides the energy dissipating mechanism. An optimization model for mathematical programming inspires a sequential sizing rule. The presented numerical examples indicate design and manufacturing guides for practical retaining systems.
