In preparation for the introduction of the Automobile Recycling Law, various disposal technologies are under development, and ASR (Automobile Shredder Residue) is one of the most active research areas. It is not easy to separate out the contents of ASR because it consists of various scrap materials that are entangled intricately. A pre-disposal separating system for ASR is being developed, which will bring great advantages to shredder companies, and also will contribute to the improvement of recycling rates. ASR is roughly divided into two categories: noncombustible substances with large specific gravities and combustible substances with small specific gravities. A prototype system has been developed for separating and recovering valuable resources from ASR without much cost and energy. The development focus was to disentangle and then separate entangled scrap materials. The system has three disentangling devices: a continuous supply device that carries out rough disentangling, superheated-steam direct-injection; and a rotary knocking separation device. These three disentangling functions have realized highly accurate separation. Besides disentangling, superheated-steam injected to ASR also helps wash away toxic substances and dust adhered to ASR.
