This paper studies the optimal Hankel-norm reduction (OHNR) of a half-vehicle active suspension model and its application in suspension multiobjective control. Firstly, a numerical algorithm of OHNR is presented explicitly and utilised to reduce the order of the active suspension model. Secondly, the advantages of OHNR are illustrated by comparison with other model-reduction methods. Thirdly, the reduced suspension model created by the OHNR method is used to design a mixed controller of reduced order for the suspension. Finally, computer simulations are carried out to demonstrate that the controller based on the reduced model is not only of lower order and easy to implement, but also achieves similar performance to that of a full-order controller. Thus the optimal Hankel-norm approximation of the active suspension model makes it possible to design a simple and easily-implementable controller with excelent performance, and can be widely utilised in automotive engineering. Although the suspension-model Hankel-norm reduction can work quite well in practice, it does not theretically guarantee the nominal/robust stability or performance of the controller designed from it. A trial-and-error process is needed to achieve suspension stability and performance. In the future, an order-reduced multiobjective control strategy, a more systematical method, will be applied in active suspension design. It is also of great interest to study the model reduction for a vehicle chassis system and to apply it to integrated vehicle-chassis control system.
