The US Navy is planning to develop fields of autonomous 4D underwater sensors for a variety of applications ranging from distributed antisubmarine warfare to environmental sampling linked to the LAN (local area network). Benthos Inc. is designing systems for which acoustic communications channel appears well matched to a short range of separation among sensors. The data acquired from these sensors must be locally processed, integrated, and passed through the larger WAN (wide area network). The company has given an eight-year support to the US Seaweb program, along with developmental work on science and technology projects for other Navy programs. Supported by the University of California, San Diego, Benthos has developed a highly capable daughter board for the modem, which provides a combination of high data rate demodulation, general-purpose signal processing capabilities, and image capture. The company has also developed SMART (Smart Modem and Release Technology) for the program.
