Probability of detection (POD) methods have provided a method of quantifying the detection capability of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods and have been used in a wide range of applications involving detection of both surface connected detects produced by fabrication processes and fatigue cracks that initiate and grow in service. Extending POD methods must to the characterization of NDE capabilities as applied to subsurface defects presented a number of significant challenges. The results are: There is a need for a POD metric in a wide range of applications. A definitive acceptance criteria is required. A reproducible system 'calibration' is required. A stable NDE procedure is required. An approach to 3-D POD as applied to CT inspection of solid rocket motors was discussed. Features of the approach described include scanning a the highest available sensitivity in a survey mode to produce 'token markers' and then characterization, analysis and discrimination of each marker in terms of the acceptance criteria boundaries.
