Although NDE imaging modalities are gaining acceptance in airline maintenance hangars operations, the high cost/complexity of these units precludes their wide use. With low cost position encoders (for handwriting capture) available for PCs and hand held inspection instruments available with data ports or alarm outputs, a low cost generic manual scanning instrument should be realizable. The use of images such as C-scans can greatly enhance the interpretation of NDE data, and the primary barriers to this to date have been cost and complexity. The merging of portable NDE instruments already in inventory and low cost encoding devices has been demonstrated, and is primarily a exercise in software and minimal hardware development. In fact, the encoders demonstrated in this work could be easily integrated into and powered by the instruments tested here. This would allow the merging of the data streams (position and NDE signal) for output to the software platform. Flaw detectors are currently available with B-scan capability (with encoder inputs). It has been demonstrated here that C-scan capability could be added.
