This paper focuses on some aspects of software systems development and its deployment in the automotive domain. It identifies how IT effectiveness is driven by corporate strategy and the requirements arising from this strategy. It recommends the deployment of standard software (Commercial Off-The-Shelf software - COTS) instead of custom-developed software. Furthermore, it describes how flexibility into the processes is achieved through the use of standardized interfaces this being the key pre-requisite of process innovations. As software deployment for a vast number of end-users requires a well-coordinated software release process, a generic process with IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is presented. This paper addresses how to avoid risky unplanned events during software development and deployment. To reduce the unacceptable costs on the end-users' side, the use of appropriate quality assurance and release management processes for COTS are also presented.
