Under a cooperation agreement between AVIO Propulsione Aerospaziale and the Department of Mechanical, Nuclear and Production Engineering for the University of Pisa (DIMNP) several research activities on gearing have been developed to investigate some issues in advanced aerospace gearing. A theoretical and numerical activity has been promoted aimed at developing general and accurate methods for analysing contact between a couple of conjugate surfaces, with particular applications to cylindrical spur, helical, spiral bevel gears and face gears. This research is part of a wide framework encompassing theoretical studies on gear cutting and related tooth geometry, load tooth contact analysis and related tribology studies for several kinds of gears. The tests were performed at a test rig currently operating at the CRTM laboratory of DIMNP. The main gear test rig represents a further revolution of the four square concept. The gear test rig and test articles are described. Control and monitoring programs developed are outlined. A hybrid approach advanced software was developed which combines an FEM analysis of the tooth bulk behaviour and a semi-analytical solution of the surface contact problem. Test campaigns are described: 1. bending fatigue tests, 2. pitting tests.
