In the future, microcontrollers used in automotive applications will have to meet escalating demands from different areas. For this reason, NEC Electronics (Europe) regards the concept of Systems Engineering as the key to handling the development of the complex system vehicle. Systems Engineering describes successful methods for developing complex systems. As a meta-discipline, Systems Engineering deals with the methodology from the initial idea, via the development and validation to the final realization and use of the system. Systems Engineering can be considered as a structured development process: which first analyses all aspects of the desired functionality over the complete product lifetime - from the corporate and customer's point of view - and documents the requirements, and then proceeds with design synthesis and system validation. At no time does it lose sight of the complete problem. This article looks at the two basic automotive electronic network architecture types, centralized and decentralized architecture, comparing their advantages, disadvantages and impacts on future microcontroller functional requirements. It shows how a Systems Engineering approach would shape the development process, using as an example the development platform for NEC's future CarGate-X product for central gateways. Inherent in the build-up phase of the development platform were a consistent Systems Engineering approach, enhanced Rapid Prototyping and close cooperation with suppliers and the OEM. The outcome is a fully functional development platform which supports rapid completion of the supplier's A-model and accelerated integration of the later CarGate-X into the final product.
