For the development of future networked vehicle control systems, the hardware and software architecture must provide for safety, reliability and cost-efficiency. On the future vehicle control systems, the integrated vehicle motion control that combines ECUs in a high-speed network is planned. However, in the system that connects multiple ECUs via a network, the failure of one ECU may lead to system-wide failure. The authors propose a concept of dependable and cost-effective vehicle control architecture for networked systems. The concept is based on Autonomous Decentralized Systems. The autonomous decentralized systems are used in control and business systems i.e. power, plant and communication systems, which are required to be highly efficient and dependable. The proposed architecture concept realizes a fail-operational system by using non fail operational subsystems. The details of the concept, architecture, and performance are discussed in this paper. The autonomous decentralized control platform for vehicles proposed consists of nodes (sensor, actuator, controller), which share the data in the 'data field' and can do autonomous operation, autonomous monitoring and autonomous backup. The 'data field' is a virtual shared memory space over the control network (CAN, FlexRay etc.). Autonomous operation is the function to operate the node, triggered by time conditions and state transitions of the node, without receiving the processing demand from other nodes. Autonomous monitoring is a function to check itself, and to guard the spread of an error to other nodes. Autonomous backup is the function to check errors of the other nodes and calculate the required data to operate its own node by simple control function. The next step is to evaluate the proposed platform by simulation and experiment, and identify and resolve any issues that could affect mass-production to achieve a low cost high reliable x-by-wire platform.
