Several major evolutions have been introduced on A380, such as - Interactive cockpit; - Enhanced maintenance; - Electronic on board documentation; - New services for passengers and pilots; - 5000 PSI hydraulics; - Two hydraulics circuits (instead of three on current A/C); - Electrical Back-up Hydrostatic Actuators (EBHA) Variable frequency electrical generation; - New electricity distribution concept (Solid state technology SSPC). To support these key evolutions Airbus decided to introduce on A380 a new concept for Avionics: Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA). IMA provides configurable and flexible solutions in order to implement increasingly CPU and data communication demanding Aircraft functions. IMA consists of common and standardized computing resources (IMA Modules or LRM - Line Replaceable Module) and high-speed network (AFDX based on 100 Mbits/s Full Duplex Ethernet) for all avionics communications. 2 types of IMA Modules have been developed: - CPIOM (Core Processing Input/Output Module), which executes systems applications software (robust partitioning, API/OS) and manages specific I/O of the supported systems applications - IOM (Input/Output Module), which manages the transfer to AFDX (mainly), and from AFDX, of different types of I/O (429, discrete, CAN, analogue), generally shared/used by several systems. IMA architecture has been designed to respect the usual side segregation and has been optimized with regards to network bandwidth use and safety and reliability constraints. This concept makes it possible to standardise computing resources, integrate several functions on the same hardware, reduce development costs by limiting the number of computers to develop, limit wiring using a high speed multiplexed bus, provide flexibility for evolutions, through configurability of IMA, reduce number of spares to carry thanks to common hardware.
