This article presents a new stabilisation concept for light and heat resistance. Sunlight triggers a decomposition process in coatings that can result in an undesirable modification of their properties. To prevent these decomposition processes, light stabilisers are used as additives. The light stabilisers available for coatings are UV-absorbers and sterically hindered amines (also known as Hindered Amine Light Stabilisers, HALS). In this study a 1:1 combination of a UV-absorber of the benzotriazole class together with a HALS was used. The combination of different stabilisers generate positive synergistic effects for the protection of interior and exterior coatings against light and heat. It could be shown that a stabiliser system consisting of UV-absorber and radical scavenger is good to excellent in exterior plastic coatings stabilisation, both in gloss retention and colour change behaviour. Using the same - only light stabilisation - concept in car interior (soft feel) coatings is not sufficient to fulfill all demands. The addition of a small amount of a slow hydrolyzing phenolic antioxidant with low yellowing tendency can be advantageous to significantly reduce the colour development in heat-exposed coatings.
