An innovative sonar-based surveillance system, consisting of an unmanned 11-meter RHIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) equipped with a low-frequency dipping sonar has been analyzed. The surveillance system has the ability to rapidly and safely conduct ASW (antisubmarine warfare) operations from surface ships in littorals. A scenario-neutral approach, and several measures of effectiveness such as SOA (speed of advance) and SVP (sound velocity profile) are considered for the analysis. The dipping sonar systems used fall in the frequency range of 1.2 to 11-kilohertz. The common characteristics of these sonar systems include omni-directional sources, variable depth capability, directivity against ambient noise greater than 14 decibels, and a total weight of less than 750 pounds. The results show that the surveillance system has adequate capability to conduct surveillance in front of a surface group advancing at speeds greater than 20 knots. The proposed system is also economical than helicopter-borne system, in terms of life-cycle cost estimates.
