We describe the recent development of Sonic IR Imaging (SIR) NDE for aircraft structures. In the Sonic IR imaging NDE technique, a short ultrasonic pulse is applied to the aircraft/aircraft structures to excite the defects to heat up, while an infrared camera images the time evolution of the heating effect to identify the defective areas in the target. The 40 kHz hand-held new prototype ultrasonic excitation source is lighter and easier to handle compared to our previous 20 kHz source. The previous source was a modification of a commercial hand-held device, and tended to give results that were operator-dependent. With the new model, we are able to detect cracks on the fuselage of the B737 testbed with greater consistency, and with no operator dependence. Several cracks are shown clearly in the IR image. Special optics is used in the IR imaging system to produce this high spatial resolution. Also, this image was made immediately after the beginning of the sound pulse to avoid blurring the cracks due to heat diffusion. This arrangement is, of course, not practical for actual inspections, but is presented here to show the capability of the system. While these cracks do not penetrate through the sample, Sonic IR imaging can reveal their presence from either side of the sample.
