In recent years worldwide energy usage and environmental issues have raised serious social concerns. In particular, the influence of exhaust gas on the environment is becoming one of the most serious concerns, resulting in the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol (aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions world wide), the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations in the United States, and the EURO regulations in Europe. In addition to this, because of the spike in world fuel prices, fuel-efficient and low-emission vehicles are attracting lots of attention and world vehicle manufacturers are concentrating a lot of effort on developing HEVs. PEVE began commercial production of batteries for HEV applications in 1997 and currently supply Toyota Motor Corporation (Prius, Estima Hybrid and Alphard Hybrid), and Honda Motor Company (Insight and Civic). PEVE began mass production of its first generation prismatic battery in 2000 and its second generation battery, which provided more power and required less room, in 2003. PEVE have sold over 200,000 battery packs.Panasonic EV Energy (PEVE) has developed a new prismatic battery for HEVs that improves the battery's cooling performance by 40%, and reduces the cell height by 10% and the cell volume by 14%, resulting in a reduction of the battery pack height of 20% and battery pack volume of 26%, without effecting the characteristics of the current model, through improvements in cell and module structure and construction. Furthermore by improving the construction of the battery cell, the smallest component of a battery pack is now an individual cell. This means it is possible to customize the size of the battery module, enabling battery pack designers to better satisfy customers' installation requirements of individual vehicles.
