The article describes the concept and the development process of an advanced driving assistance system for heavy goods vehicles, called Haptical Lane Assistant, providing an active steering-torque, thus preventing unintended departures from the lane (Lane Keeping Support function). The presented Haptical Lane Assistant system is a Lane Warning System that sends to the driver an haptic information in order to prevent unintentional lane departures. It is an evolution of the conventional Lane Departure Warning systems: if the vehicle is travelling in the lane centre the system does not operate, but if the vehicle is approaching the borderlines the system provides a tactile warning to the driver, indicating the right manoeuvre to take back the vehicle in the lane centre. The Haptical Lane Assistant function has been carried out equipping the vehicle with devices able to detect its position in comparison to the road and to act on the steering wheel in concomitance with the torque applied by the driver. Starting from the same sensors used for the standard Lane Warning system and using an Electric Power Assisted Steering system it is possible to perform the functionality with an haptic feedback, and to improve the overall performance of the system. The system architecture consists of: - a vision System; - a steering box based on an electric power steering device; - an automotive ECU that contains control algorithms. , - a Human Machine Interface , - an odometer , - a gyrometer, - an accelerometer, - a CAN bus. The haptical lane assistant gives a reaction torque on the steering wheel in case the vehicle is unintentionally approaching the edge of the lane: the system consists of a lane detection device detecting the lane markings and the border of the road, the information from the front view camera are elaborated by a control unit, calculating the level of the torque to be applied via an Electric Power Steering system, which is geared to the column of a standard hydraulic steering box.
