This paper describes a development of a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) system for light traction, which is being demonstrated by a DMFC powered scooter. The development is neither fixed nor focused on the scooter as such, instead it is to be seen as a technology development for light traction with a scooter as a case in point for application. The development has been going on for six years now and started out from a 2 W stack built up as a verification of results achieved in a PhD thesis. This outline intends to give insight into the development, its motivation, prospects and constraints for scientific purposes and in order to raise interest with potential cooperation partners. Therefore, comprehensive economic, ecological and technical background information is provided beyond mere description of this technology as such.
