Motorcycles pose specific EMS (engine management system) requirements that ask for dedicated system architectures. Motorbikes engines specific lay-out and higher dynamics vary a lot from car application. Electric power, space and weight issues are also more important than in automotive field. Specific EMS requirements drive to dedicated system architectures, control strategies and components design. From its 70 years experience in air and fuel supply systems Deliorto has investigated a spread of engine control technologies and components, in order to identify the key solutions for present and future motorcycles needs. As a result of this evaluation a comprehensive range of specific EMS modules is presented. Fuel injected 4-stroke motorcycle EMS shows a general trend of integration of functional contents into modules, with throttle assembly as a key sub-system. On single cylinder a centralized architecture was developed through an Integrated Air Fuel Module (IAFM), that represent the EMS core module. In multi-cylinder engines the higher complexity and ever-increasing demand for new functionality is addressed with a flexible, distributed modules, EMS architecture. The future integration of the air control function with ignition and injection management will reduce exhaust emissions while adding customer valuable benefit as easy and pleasant drive.
