Flexible thin-film solar cells (TFSC) are developed for space applications based on the Cu-chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)Se2 -CIGS- as absorber material on flexible substrate material. Their inherent properties make them a very good candidate for new flexible solar arrays. This paper describes their path to success as well as the required changes and modifications with regard to the special requirements for space usage. Solarion develops and produces flexible TFSC for space and terrestrial applications on roll-to-roll web coaters using polyimide as substrate material.
