Vehicle acoustics has been frequently perceived as pacemaker in the acoustic domain, powering new ideas and exploring cutting-edge possibilities in the product development process. As a result, considerable achievements can be observed such as the continuous reduction of the interior noise level. The present article is intended to highlight key issues in contemporary vehicle acoustics and to outline the general framework for current and future activities in the field. It is demonstrated that various new challenges are presented to acoustic engineers due to ongoing technological developments, changing market trends, and increased legislative demands. Further, a psychoacoustic-based approach to sound design is presented that may facilitate the shaping of distinct vehicle characters according to the product portfolio. Finally, the regulation for pass-by noise emissions according to ISO 362 is focussed, and implications of a proposal for a revision of the test procedure applicable are discussed. The proposal for the new ISO 362 includes the following major revisions: -Measurements shall now be referred to noise emissions that reflect partial load situations; -The level to be approved shall represent an urban- specific acceleration value Lurban depending on the vehicle's power-to-mass-ratio (PMR); -Procedure shall involve interpolated measurements based on cruise at constant speed (Lcruise) and pass-by at full load, i.e., wide open throttle (Lwot).
