The Honda collision mitigation brake system is an active and preventive safety system to reduce the number of accidents and to reduce the severity of the impact in case of rear-end collisions. Through the research of this system the following facts were made clear. Rear-end collisions can occur during ordinary driving as a result of momentary inattention. The collision mitigation brake system was developed to prevent interference with driver's ordinary driving and to assist avoidance operations. This system is intended to be effective in reducing the number of accidents at low and medium speeds, which are the greater part of rear-end collisions. Honda's CMS technology (Collision Mitigation brake Systrem) is available in Japanese market for the Inspire sedan and the Odyssey minivan since 2003 and the Legend since 2004. The achievement and monitoring of system reliability and the communication of an accurate understanding of the system, without giving the drivers over-confidence have been major challenges during the market.
