Highly loaded car components will be manufactured of steels by bulk forming also in future because optimal performance characteristics can be obtained by those techniques. Research and development is aimed at the production of still more complex components of high-strength steels using highly productive forming processes. In this paper, new process developments in warm extrusion, spin extrusion and cross rolling are described, which can contribute to reduced production time and are directed towards enhanced in-service safety of power train components and their weight reduction. The presented new process developments in bulk forming at elevated temperatures offer great technical and economical potential for the production of power train components in cars and trucks. Yet with their complexity, these processes and their combinations pose a high challenge to the manufacturing technology. The optimization of forming process. tooling and equipment as well as the development of tool steels and workpiece steels have to be performed target-oriented in further R&D projects.
